Catherine Butler joined Kalbian Hagerty in late 2022 and is a member of the firm’s taxation and corporate practice groups.
As a member of the taxation practice group, Catherine assists clients in matters related to IRS audits and examinations, compliance, and estate planning and administration. Catherine also advises on U.S. tax-exempt and foreign corporation client matters.
As a member of the corporate practice group, Catherine works on various governance and transactional matters including formation, business management, due diligence, compliance, and equity and debt financing.
In addition, prior to attending law school, Catherine was a legal assistant for a Northern Virginia law firm where she assisted in the preparation and review of briefs, motions, discovery documents, and deposition summaries.
Catherine graduated cum laude from American University’s Washington College of Law and was an Exceptional Pro Bono Pledge Honoree for her work as a certified tax preparer with VITA and as a student attorney at the Janet R. Spragen’s Federal Tax Clinic, where she provided counseling and representation for low-income clients in audit examinations and appeals conferences before the IRS or in the U.S. Tax Court. She also worked as a Senior Staffer on the school’s Administrative Law Review.
In 2018, Catherine received her LLM in Taxation and a Certificate of Specialization in Estate Planning from Georgetown University.
Prior to joining Kalbian Hagerty, Catherine worked in the Indirect and Private tax groups as a Senior Associate at Ernst & Young, LLP in McLean, VA, where her responsibilities included conducting research on state-specific matrices for State and Local Income Tax compliance for fortune 500 corporate clients.
